Lead · Paint Chip

Paint-chip sampling — lab-confirmed lead, micro-destructive.

When XRF returns inconclusive — or when a court, lender or regulator wants destructive verification — paint-chip sampling is the lab-confirmed standard. Micro-destructive, chain-of-custody, AIHA-LAP analyzed.

How paint-chip sampling runs

What's in scope.

Below is the standard scope for an Envirex paint chip sampling engagement. We size the project to the building — line-item, fixed-fee — and write the quote against this catalog.

Sample selection.Targeted micro-removal of a known surface area, prioritizing layers, components and locations where XRF was inconclusive or where evidentiary clarity is required.

Chain-of-custody.Each sample is bagged, labeled, sealed and logged under chain-of-custody at the point of collection. Samples are couriered to the lab the same day where possible.

AIHA-LAP laboratory analysis.Atomic absorption or ICP-MS analysis at an AIHA-LAP accredited lab. Results expressed in mg/cm² or % weight as the engagement requires.

Substrate restoration.Sample sites are filled and color-matched on request — particularly for occupied properties where finish appearance matters.

Defensible reporting.Lab report attached, sampling locations photographed and mapped, methodology described — formatted for HPD, court, lender or owner use.

Regulatory framework.

Every Envirex engagement is run against the regulator who will ultimately read the report. Here are the rules that shape paint chip sampling work in New York.

HUD Protocol Chip.Sample collection and reporting to HUD Guidelines for the Evaluation and Control of Lead-Based Paint Hazards.

EPA / OSHA references.Where the project supports pre-abatement scoping, sampling is performed to EPA and OSHA expectations.

AIHA-LAP accreditation.All paint-chip analysis is performed at AIHA-LAP-accredited labs under documented chain-of-custody.

ASTM E1729.Standard practice for field collection of paint-chip samples for lead determination.

Best suited for.

Inconclusive XRF resolution, pre-abatement layer characterization, litigation and expert-witness work, transactional diligence requiring lab confirmation.

What you receive.

Lab-attached sampling report in 5–7 business days from sample collection, with photographs and chain-of-custody.

Common Questions

Paint Chip Sampling FAQ.

Quick answers for owners, agents and counsel scoping this work.

How destructive is the sample?
Minimally. We remove a measured area roughly the size of a thumbprint, typically full paint depth, and document the location. Sites are filled on request.
Why not just use XRF?
XRF is faster and non-destructive. Most inspections start there. Paint-chip is used when XRF returns inconclusive — typically because of substrate interference — or when evidentiary clarity is required.
How fast is the lab turn?
Standard turn is 5 business days; expedited 24–48 hour analysis is available at premium.
