Paint-chip sampling — lab-confirmed lead, micro-destructive.
When XRF returns inconclusive — or when a court, lender or regulator wants destructive verification — paint-chip sampling is the lab-confirmed standard. Micro-destructive, chain-of-custody, AIHA-LAP analyzed.
What's in scope.
Below is the standard scope for an Envirex paint chip sampling engagement. We size the project to the building — line-item, fixed-fee — and write the quote against this catalog.
Sample selection.Targeted micro-removal of a known surface area, prioritizing layers, components and locations where XRF was inconclusive or where evidentiary clarity is required.
Chain-of-custody.Each sample is bagged, labeled, sealed and logged under chain-of-custody at the point of collection. Samples are couriered to the lab the same day where possible.
AIHA-LAP laboratory analysis.Atomic absorption or ICP-MS analysis at an AIHA-LAP accredited lab. Results expressed in mg/cm² or % weight as the engagement requires.
Substrate restoration.Sample sites are filled and color-matched on request — particularly for occupied properties where finish appearance matters.
Defensible reporting.Lab report attached, sampling locations photographed and mapped, methodology described — formatted for HPD, court, lender or owner use.
Regulatory framework.
Every Envirex engagement is run against the regulator who will ultimately read the report. Here are the rules that shape paint chip sampling work in New York.
HUD Protocol Chip.Sample collection and reporting to HUD Guidelines for the Evaluation and Control of Lead-Based Paint Hazards.
EPA / OSHA references.Where the project supports pre-abatement scoping, sampling is performed to EPA and OSHA expectations.
AIHA-LAP accreditation.All paint-chip analysis is performed at AIHA-LAP-accredited labs under documented chain-of-custody.
ASTM E1729.Standard practice for field collection of paint-chip samples for lead determination.
